HOUSTON (April 29) – KLR Group driver Erica Enders’ return to her home track ended almost as soon as her race started.

Enders’ Chevrolet Cobalt bogged on the starting line in her first-round matchup Sunday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway, and she fell to good friend Larry Morgan.

“When I let the clutch out, the car just stuck the tire and bogged,” Enders said. “It’s like I left in third gear, which I didn’t do. The car just bogged. Finally it caught back up and went through low gear. Down the rest of the track, it was pulling fine. I closed an eight-car gap to three or four, but dadgum, it wasn’t even close.”

Enders’ pass was 6.723 seconds at 208.84, the slowest run she made all weekend. Enders qualified No. 6 with a 6.575 at 210.64, and her three other qualifying passes were with .023 seconds of that number.

Morgan advanced to the quarterfinals with a run of 6.655 seconds at 208.55 mph.(…)
Read the rest of Local hero Enders turned back in opening round of Houston race

Traveling across the country as well as heading to a new facility always brings new challenges to a race weekend. We are headed to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the next two rounds in the Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup Series.

Learning a new track always brings multiple challenges for a driver. Not only adapting to a new place but learning a track you yourself have never driven and brings what some may consider a disadvantage. Luckily we have such awesome technology these days you can take laps on a simulator to get a feel for what the track has to offer. Not every person has the opportunity to test before the series attends the event so it is a learning process for the whole team. I have only ever been as far as Wisconsin/Minnesota west. Taking the time to do a bit of research on a track is very important. Ensuring you are prepared as much as possible for each event minimizes any upper hand others who also have never been to the track always helps.

Portugal is a fantastic travel destination for world travelers that offers many interesting and exciting tourist attractions. One of the most interesting sites to see while in Portugal is known as the Capela dos Ossos, also known as the Chapel of Bones. The goal of the exhibit is to illustrate the notion that no matter what our differences may be, we are all made up of bones. If you are going to be traveling overseas to Portugal you will need to have a valid passport. If you need to obtain a same day passport before your trip, you can go on the internet and visit an online passport agency that will be able to assist you.

Passport Requirements

Passports are a traveler’s most essential document. They allow for their holders to go freely from country to country. If you do not have a valid United States passport you will be denied entry into another country. Also, if you lose your passport while overseas, you will not be allowed back into the United States until you obtain a replacement passport. If you are traveling soon and need a same day United States passport, you can get one online with the help of an internet passport agency.

Popular Attraction

The chapel derives its name from the walls that are covered with human skulls and bones. In the 16th century a Franciscan monk wanted to get his fellow brothers to contemplate the idea of life being transitory. He established the chapel of bones for this purpose The Capela dos Ossos is a very popular site in Evora Portugal. It is a small chapel that can be found at the entrance to the Church of St. Francis.

The Chapel

A look up at the ceiling will reveal a view of with painted brick ornately decorated with death themed motifs. The estimated number of skeletons that adorns this chapel is about 5,000 and have come from cemeteries from over a dozen churches. The chapel is comprised of three spans that are 59 feet by 36 feet. Light enters due to three small openings that are on the left. The walls and pillars within the chapel are carefully decorated with an arrangement of bones and skulls that are held together by cement.

Other Sites

Other great attractions to check out when visiting Evora include ancient Roman Ruins, an old aqueduct, as well as the Almendres Cromlech. The Almendres Cromlech is a megalithic complex that is a vital megalithic monument within the Iberian Peninsula. There is also a nice park nearby and the historic center of Evora is an UNESCO World Heritage site. A visit to Evora University is a must see as well, the main building was formed on an ancient convent that was founded in 1559.

Portugal is a country rich in history and culture. Anyone visit will offer wonderful experiences and a look into the past. The Capela dos Ossos is a prime example, along with the numerous other attractions that Evora has to offer. So, make sure your passport is up to date, or get a same day passport renewal in order to visit this protected site and experience history in the small town of Evora, Portugal.

Hey Guys and Gals! It’s not often that I write posts on here about anything other than ladies that are kicking some serious ass on the track. However there is something I want to share with you guys that is very close to my heart. I’ve been involved in grassroots drifting for close to eight years, organizing, driving, etc. Drifting in the South began in the great city of Atlanta at Turner field nonetheless. The iconic parking lot has produced many amazing drivers and many great memories shared among friends. That is all about to come to an end thanks to an ordinance being passed by city officials. They are specifically targeting drifting inside city limits be on public or private property.

View the Amendment here.

Without drifting in Atlanta (inside city limits) I would never have met the amazing friends I have or became a part of a community that is like no other. I also would never have met my fiance. If these members of the council knew how many lives they are affecting by this I don’t think that they would be trying to pass this. Drifting keeps kids and adults alike out of trouble. We all know that car culture is a different beast and not everyone gets it. Those who do get it understand the passion of watching/driving and know what it would be like if all that was taken away. Yes, there’s other places we could have events outside of city limits. Somewhere this ordinance wouldn’t be enforced but it just wouldn’t be the same. If you could please take time and sign the petition for us, and by us I mean everyone who Atlanta drifting has touched. We would be forever grateful. If you want to please share this with your friends.

Click here to sign the petition.

From each and everyone of us we thank you for signing this. I don’t need to tell you why, if you signed it you get it.

The foundations of the modern sport, however, were poured the following year with the opening of Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. The track’s 63rd running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 is set for Saturday night (FOX, 7 p.m. ET).

Before Harold Brasington’s then-1.25-mile track was built – a year-long process – asphalt race tracks were virtually unheard of in the southeastern United States. The Strictly Stock Series competed on paved ovals only twice pre-Darlington, at the 1/2-mile Dayton Speedway in Ohio although Daytona’s Beach & Road Course surface was a combination of pavement and sand.

Darlington, however, was the game-changer leading to construction of paved, banked superspeedways (tracks measuring a mile or longer) over the next decade in Daytona Beach, Fla., Charlotte and Atlanta.

More than 80 cars from all points of the compass turned out for the Sept. 4, 1950 Southern 500, driven rather than towed in many cases from small Carolina towns a few miles from the track and more than 2,500 miles distant. Qualifying for the 75-car field took two weeks as Brasington mimicked events leading up to the Indianapolis 500.

Johnny Mantz, a 31-year-old from Long Beach, Calif., drove a six-cylinder Plymouth to a nine-lap victory over Fireball Roberts in a race that took more than six and a half hours to complete. Much of the race was run on the track’s flat apron because the banking was rough and abrasive and quickly wore tires down to the cords.

Mantz’s Plymouth, jointly owned by Hubert Westmoreland and Bill France Sr., was the only car in the field equipped with special Firestone racing tires that lasted all day. While his competitors were in the pits for tire changes, Mantz only had to stop periodically for fuel – leading to his enormous margin of victory. He averaged 75.25 mph – not much slower than Curtis Turner’s 82.034 mph pole speed.

Many of those competing in the first Southern 500 are deceased including top four finishers Mantz, Roberts, the season’s champion to be Bill Rexford and 1949 champion Red Byron.

Still living are Cotton Owens, now 87 and a NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee, who finished seventh in a Plymouth. Hershel McGriff, racing the same Oldsmobile 88 with which he’d won the year’s inaugural Carrera Pan America – Mexican Road Race – was eighth. McGriff competed in several NASCAR K&N Pro Series events in 2011 at the age of 84.

America was a far different place five years after the end of World War II. There was little infrastructure, especially in the south, no Interstate highways and not much in the way of hotels in such rural areas as Darlington, S.C.

Gasoline cost 18 cents a gallon, a new car, which could be raced in the Southern 500 without modification, went for ,510 and the average annual salary was ,210. The price of a black and white television set was 9.95 but it was unlikely you’d find auto racing programming on the few available channels.

Owens, whose crew was comprised with relatives and friends, had begun racing close to home with a Chrysler dragged from a wrecking yard. His friends included NASCAR Hall of Famer Walter “Bud” Moore. He “commuted” to the track each day – a three-hour drive – from his home in Union, S.C.

McGriff met France and Turner at the Mexican race. “Bill invited me to come to Darlington,” said McGriff, who raced in California, Oregon and Washington. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have known about it.”

McGriff drove his Oldsmobile cross country from Portland, Ore., a distance of more than 2,600 miles sharing driving duties with his owner/mechanic Ray Sundstrom. “I slept two or three nights on the county courthouse lawn and went into the bathroom to clean up,” said McGriff, then 22 years of age.

The race itself was spectacular – if only because so many cars were confined to a relatively small space. McGriff remembers the field being lined up and stretching all the way around to turns 3 and 4. “I can’t imagine how they scored them,” he said. “You could go 10 deep the track was so wide. We ran on the flat (apron). You could run on the top part (banking) and go faster but you wouldn’t run far.”

The race was an endurance contest as much in the pits as on the track.

McGriff had found three or four volunteers at a local gas station to service his car. Changing a tire required a heavy floor jack and a lug wrench – air guns and lightweight jacks came to stock car racing much later. Gas was dumped into the car through a funnel.

Mantz, meanwhile, kept up a consistent pace content to let the faster, eight-cylinder cars wear out their tires. McGriff changed 14 – at a tire. “Then we’d go by him like he was standing still,” said McGriff, who completed 374 of the 400 laps and was paid 0.

And afterwards? “I got back in the car and drove home,” said McGriff. “I didn’t get any dents. There was so much room that if a guy wrecked in front of you, you could stop.” Today’s Darlington racing, where speeds exceed 180 mph, obviously is not your grandfather’s Southern 500.

Owens went on to win nine times as a driver and 38 races as an owner. NASCAR Hall of Famer David Pearson drove Owens’ No. 6 Dodge to the 1966 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. “His hobby was his love; he got to do it as a living and we did it as a family,” said Debbie Davis, Owens’ daughter.

McGriff, named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998, won four times and finished sixth in 1954 standings. Offered one of Carl Kiekhaefer’s potent Chrysler 300s for the 1955 season, McGriff instead chose to stay in Oregon to run the family’s lumber business.

Holbrook, driving the #67 TrueCar Honda Civic Si, had what she described as the best weekend of her racing career thus far. Racing in three events over two days at Miller Motorsports Park near Tooele, Utah, Holbrook scored a sixth-place finish in the first race yesterday morning (won by Todd Lamb) and then a fourth-place finish in the second race (won by Michael Cooper,) which was held back-to-back with the first. She rounded out her weekend with a fifth-place finish today after having worked her way from the back of the field.

“I was third on grid today because I had the third-fastest time from the second race of the weekend, said Holbrook. “I was in a really good position to just stay up front and battle the entire time. On the start of the race, I’m not sure what happened. Either we had a misfire or I was in third gear… I couldn’t get the car rolling. The engine took a moment to breathe because I was on the throttle but then I got full power back and it was fine. By then I was last. (…)
Read the rest of TOP-FIVE FINISHES FOR TRUECAR IN UTAH; DRIVELINE DAMAGE CUTS DAY SHORT IN BRAZIL
